Facebook, a platform with more than 900 Million active users is becoming a medium where all of us go to check news, updates, pictures and videos. But, after recently attending the Digital Media Forum Dubai 2012, a lot of interesting questions were raised with one in particular that caught my attention:

Is Facebook the place for customers to communicate with their favourite brands for help?

Don’t we all want to be fit and fabulous? That means putting down the burger, stepping away from that fizzy drink and walking slowly but surely to the gym.

It takes discipline to look your best, and that holds true for being the best in PR.

We stumbled across 5 ways fitness can build your PR muscle, and we definitely agree with discipline. We also like:

How many times have you tried explaining what you do for a living as a PR professional to your family and friends? I find it one of the most frustrating things to do, even more exhausting than getting coverage for subsurface irrigation technology!

Well, with the aim of making our lives easier the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) has decided to create a task force to develop a final and universal definition for Public Relations, but after two months of work they managed to narrow it down to three definitions! Making our lives even more complicated.

A few weeks ago I had written a blog post about how keeping up with technological evolution, particularly in terms of social media, is essential in order for PR agencies to survive in the modern age. Interestingly enough, I recently came across a comment by Anthony De Rosa from Reuters, which suggests that this is indeed the case for newswires too!

The reason why this was a particularly intriguing read was that one would assume that newswires – who we as readers and both print and online publications rely on for ‘real-time news’ – would be just as effective as Twitter, for example, in communicating up-to-the-minute announcements. I’ve been to a lot of creative offices, and every time I’m in one, I have to check out their ‘brainstorming’ room. You will be surprised with the amount of distractions in the room; everything from random wall colours to weird looking bean bags, and from ps3’s to guitar hero’s or even a pool table that’s standing right next to a super comfy couch. I’ve seen it all!

So, what’s right in a brainstorming session? As far as the rules go, I’d say anything wild and weird is more than welcome. Negativity however is definitely not. Continue reading »

Everyone working in the Emirate of Dubai is acutely aware that despite the global recession things here over the last couple of years have been nowhere near as bad as the rest of the world. It hasn’t all been rosy, but it hasn’t been doom and gloom either.

The recent news that the Dubai’s economy is expected to grow by 4.5 percent in 2012, up from an estimated increase of more than 3 percent in 2011, has helped lift my spirits – and I hope lots of others too. Continue reading »

Have you heard about the newest kid on the block building up a storm on the social media scene? It is Pinterest, the next big social media phenomenon and some are even saying that ‘pinning may be more engaging than tweeting’.

What is it?
Pinterest is a board-style photo sharing tool that allows online users to create and manage theme-based image collections. The platform is still in beta mode (testing mode) so you need to request an invitation to get access to the tool (but don’t worry, you’ll probably get one).

Creative ideas are everywhere in the world and they’re even better when they’re used to educate people. We like the anti-littering awareness campaign called “Metel Ma Shelta”, which is designed by the graphic design students Mohamed Olaymi, Nadine Razzouk and Lama Shehadeh, to get people to stop littering on the streets.

Concept: In Lebanon there are still some incidences of people throwing garbage on the streets. The graphic design students wanted to do something about it. Continue reading »

You’re new, you’re fresh and you’re all ready to cry already? That can’t be good. Yes, PR may seem scary at first (especially since we still haven’t decided on one definition for it yet), but don’t despair. Some great tips from the seniours might do you some good.

Get going
Don’t sit around waiting for someone to teach you or things to happen, because I assure you that that’s the one thing that will bring about your downfall. PR is about being active and proactive for yourself, your company and most importantly, your client.

You know what’s so funny to me? I can be engaged in a conversation with somebody who has no interest, whatsoever, in social media, and then the next time I run into them they’re setting up social media plans. The great thing about social media is that it really is self-taught, and unlike medicine or engineering, you can become a pro – or a ‘geek’ – in a matter of ‘literally’ only a few days.

They think they know everything, they’re now the ‘experts’, but let me ask you something…did you know this?
