The way that you talk with your clients can heavily influence their attitude and respect towards you. If you use the right language, and avoid talking yourself into a trap, it’s not too difficult to manage your clients.

1. “We offer everything you could possibly need”

It’s tempting to try to please potential clients by offering everything under the sun, but this rarely works out well. Chances are that your client will see right through the charade and loose trust in you.

According to Beth Monaghan co-founder of InkHouse Media + Marketing, Confidence and Empathy are two essential traits that PR professionals should have to succeed in their work.

I totally agree. Dealing with your clients and the media can be very similar to being a salesman at an electronics shop; your client is the customer that walks in knowing that he wants to buy a digital camera, but doesn’t know which model to get for his requirements. A confident salesman will be able to clearly identify the customer’s needs, give the customer a sense of ease and comfort and therefore win the customer’s trust in his advice.

In PR, you need to be confident and compassionate, but how do you achieve that?

Everyone – individuals and businesses alike – seems to be jumping on to the social media bandwagon recently. Understandable, I suppose, given the increasing importance placed on establishing an online presence in order to keep up with current events, establish open lines of communication and even making sure your complaints are heard.

However, it seems there is a certain etiquette to using social media as a marketing tool, something that became evident to me after attending the inaugural Digital Media Forum 2012 in Dubai.

In the spirit of Mother’s Day, thought I’d give finishing this blog a try. Usually I don’t get stuck, I know what I want to write and I go about writing just that. But this is a sensitive subject. One that I’ve carefully approached many times.

I’m a career mom, obviously. I fight the urge to snooze every morning so that I can get in some ‘quality’ time with my son before I leave him for the rest of the day. This means letting him hold my phone while I quickly apply my makeup and try to get out the door. I’m usually always late; it’s not the traffic and it’s not the weather either, but it’s because he said ‘blue’ for the first time today, and I just had to hear it again.

Ever since we started the C&B blog, it has not just changed the way I write but even what I read. I never imagined myself writing a blog or anything that looked like a blog. Just like any starter, my first question was ‘What is a blog’? The answer will remain confusing till you start writing one. An important thing when you are writing a blog is to know what to write about. To begin with, I always look for topics and things that I find interesting and hope that others will like it too. You make a few mistakes, like I did when I wrote my first blog (obviously that didn’t see the light of the day) and you keep getting better once you get the hang of it.

Like I said, one way to improve how you write is to read what others have to say. An interesting piece that I read recently was a blog post by Darren Rowse, ‘10 David Ogilvy Quotes that Could Revolutionize Your Blogging’ that caught my attention, a must read for bloggers, marketers or anyone for that matter.

A recent survey by fashion researchers has revealed that the majority of people surveyed thought that the tie would not be seen around offices within the next 20 years, and a quarter believed it would last less than 10 years.

There are several reasons given for this. Apparently the open-collared shirt is becoming more popular on television and cinema screens, while workplaces are adopting a more relaxed approach when it comes to neck attire.

Aren’t we all interested in hot topics? Social media is definitely a hot topic in marketing these days. Managers across all businesses are asking whether or not they need to participate – and if so, where and how.

How does it work?

Developing a social media strategy is to define your social engagement goals and success metrics, and then identify the major social media platforms to achieve objectives. Engaging with people via social media is never a single and direct path. In my experience, while the destination may be quite clear, the path with which audiences reach it will remain flexible until a critical mass of users is displaying crowd behaviours.
