George Durzi

George has made it his business to understand the dynamics of the globally expanding social network by harnessing a passion for quality assurance and online strategy. As Manager of Online Services and Strategy for C&B, he is responsible for establishing and monitoring social networks for the company while building an integrated web of social connections that C&B clients can benefit from. This means penetrating the media and potential consumers through a new generation of PR,which focuses on drawing upon users‚Äô power for controlling the news they receive and share. Preparing for his current role with C&B, George was a Quality Assurance Analyst with Aspire Services, where he assisted international customers with queries, testing applications and ensuring quality in all of their requirements. When asked why social media and online strategy, the answer is a constant desire to think ‚Äòoutside the box‚Äô and come up with new strategies and ideas to help improve the company’s image and professionalism. ‚ÄúEngaging with other people online and staying on top of the latest technology and social media tools is the thing what really moves me.‚Äù ‚ÄòSocial Media is exploding.‚Äô A phrase most of us are aware of, and many of us use, but few fully comprehend the implications.

People are finally digesting the need for social media, after numerous posts, infographs and examples – this phenomenon is not something new. We’ve seen this with a previous generation’s slow acceptance of the website. It too, took a while to catch on, but catch on it did; outdated now, are those without that kind of presence on the World Wide Web.

The problem with accepting something new is in grasping the dynamics and in turn the importance of the said concept. Those who succeed though, are those who get it first.

When it comes to the world we live in, I’m caught between two: the ‘real world’ and the ‘virtual world’.

For the past year I have been working so many different angles on so many different accounts in so many different industries and, while my previous articles we more concentrated on the digital world and how establishing a strong solid presence online works to your benefit, it’s time to address traditional media. Yes, offline is still important. Jumping into online full on, and leaving traditional behind, is a mistake you can’t afford to do.

Of course, I’m of the online camp. It’s cheaper and more measurable, but I still think you need the two to tango.

The question of whether to outsource a social media company or manage it in-house has been going around for some time now. Some start-up companies’ concerns are budgets and some don’t even know what social media is all about. I personally believe that in-house social media management is more effective, but this does not mean outsourcing is a bad idea. It all depends on where the brand stands. The points below will help you decide whether you should be outsourcing social media or not.

Aren’t we all interested in hot topics? Social media is definitely a hot topic in marketing these days. Managers across all businesses are asking whether or not they need to participate – and if so, where and how.

How does it work?

Developing a social media strategy is to define your social engagement goals and success metrics, and then identify the major social media platforms to achieve objectives. Engaging with people via social media is never a single and direct path. In my experience, while the destination may be quite clear, the path with which audiences reach it will remain flexible until a critical mass of users is displaying crowd behaviours.

Facebook, a platform with more than 900 Million active users is becoming a medium where all of us go to check news, updates, pictures and videos. But, after recently attending the Digital Media Forum Dubai 2012, a lot of interesting questions were raised with one in particular that caught my attention:

Is Facebook the place for customers to communicate with their favourite brands for help?

You know what’s so funny to me? I can be engaged in a conversation with somebody who has no interest, whatsoever, in social media, and then the next time I run into them they’re setting up social media plans. The great thing about social media is that it really is self-taught, and unlike medicine or engineering, you can become a pro – or a ‘geek’ – in a matter of ‘literally’ only a few days.

They think they know everything, they’re now the ‘experts’, but let me ask you something…did you know this?

“I follow you, you follow me and if you don’t follow me then I won’t follow you.” Nowadays, it’s not just about who is a fan of who; it’s about following the right account that satisfies your needs when it comes to valuable information. But there are some forms of etiquette that every Tweep (Twitter User) should be considering.

Being Thankful
You wake up to find that someone has re-Tweeted your Tweet. Did you thank them for sharing, or just relish in the spotlight alone? Spotlight alone…bad move. Continue reading »

When people know you’re a social media god, the questions never stop. Friends and family constantly bug me with them, and one of the more popular ones is, ‘How do I protect myself on Facebook?’ The answer is quite simple; you don’t need to be a social media geek, you just need to have basic knowledge of the privacy settings on your profile. What may look high-tech and advanced for a lot of people becomes a piece of cake the minute you understand what those functions do.

While registering is obviously safe (that’s why 800 million users and counting are there), there’s a lot of stories about people getting hacked – not because Facebook isn’t safe, but because people don’t know how to use the tools. A harder question to answer is, ‘Am I protected on Facebook?’ Being ‘protected’ means limiting and controlling what certain people can see about your profile page. Here are some steps you need to take a look at if you want the answer to be, ‘Yes.’ to that very question.

It’s not enough just to make fans; you need to earn their keep. Facebook has evolved way beyond a social platform to find friends, meet new people or discover loved ones passed; it has become a brand’s calling card, a way to highlight their professional persona online and have an outstanding character presence in the digital world. But in order to stand out in a crowd, you need to do something worth noticing.

Become a Resource

Don’t just post and repost; start a conversation, ask people questions, lead the dialogue.

I love it when somebody gets it right and it’s so refreshing to find a brand that really knows what social media is all about.  Social media is not just about driving more traffic and increasing sales, it’s also about creating a “Character” online. I previously wrote about how to develop your personality online and 800 Flower is one of those brands that have. They’re warm and bubbly, yet elegant a chic and they aren’t afraid of being unique. They know who they are, their fans know who they are and they continue to succeed in developing this relationship. The boutique flower shop in Dubai – that really brings back passion to the art of floral arrangement – allows you to order online and uses bouquets to make any day an occasion.

If you go to 800 Flower’s Facebook fan page, you will notice that they have been engaging pretty well with their customers; making them feel at home and always entertained though interaction, monthly competitions and free giveaways – Tuesday’s Trivia Questions give fans a chance to win a free bouquet, delivered to their very doorstep, just for answering the questions right.
